The Urban Music Program is a club, family and musical utopia dedicated to teaching and spreading our passion for music. Over the last fifteen years, UMP has worked with hundreds of youth and adults to further their knowledge of writing, recording, DJ’ing and producing. Like any good family, we constantly inspire, support and challenge each other to grow.
The Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center is our home. We contribute to SNBC’s greater vision of providing support to communities and their healthy development. These are our shared core values:
The Urban Music Program was founded by Jon Bernson in 1997 with 8 youth, a PMX 1600 Gemini mixer and two Technic 1200′s. Over the last 15 years, the program has added new gear, new sites and produced nearly 30 albums of original music under the umbrella of the ‘Beacon Beats’ series.
Weekly programs include:
* DJ Club at A.P.Giannini Middle School (ASLC).
* DJ Club at Ulloa Elementary School (ASLP).
* Audio Classes for S.F. High School of the Arts (SOTA).
* Alumni Beatmaking (SNBC Evening Program).
* Advanced Studio Sessions at Sunset Youth Services (SYS).
UMP has performed at San Francisco City Hall, Yerba Buena Center, the SF Zoo, Amoeba Music, Aquarius Records, Juvenile Hall and at many S.F. events. The DJ Club was featured in Scratch, an award-winning documentary film about the history of DJ culture and turntablism. Numerous articles have been written about the program, including this one in the SF Weekly.
THEMAYS is a group of drone and beatmakers that includes UMP instructors, alumni and students. The collective has released two albums (KNOWFI and THEWORKS), which are available from Oakland’s Gigante Sound record label, Aquarius Records and directly through this website.
