Who We Are

Jon Bernson (Urban Music Program Founder)

Jon began working with youth in his Oakland Teach for America post in 1995. After two years, he moved across the bay to found the Urban Music Program (UMP) at the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center in San Francisco. Initially a DJ Club for middle school students, UMP has grown into a full audio program for people of all ages. During that time, Bernson has written and released his own music under several names including Ray’s Vast Basement, Window Twins, THEMAYS and most notably Exray’s, whose music can be heard in David Fincher’s 2011 blockbuster, The Social Network. He is a founding member of the Howells Transmitter art collective and has written scores for more than a dozen plays and independent films.
